Electric Fits: Opposable Thumbs
Earlier this year, I was hired as a session singer for an album. We started with just one and I ended up doing five or six, and it was such a fun experience. Walt has an incredible gift for lyrics and matching them with melody.
The Songs
Our first song was Cracked Compass, which is a theatrical and moody piece about lost love. I was so excited when Walt decided to bring me onto more songs after we finished that one. I knew it was something special!
Sonic Metamorphine is more upbeat but has a similar hint of angst to it. Another song, Opposable Thumbs, is more of a reflective ballad and was produced with an airy vibe that fits the instrumentation perfectly. Burning Spoons was a fun chance to bust out my old gospel roots! I used to sing at my grandparents’ church and hadn’t done anything like that in a long time.
A Profit & A Pusher was a ton of fun too because I got to arrange harmonies! I absolutely love doing that. The song goes through several “movements” and changes moods throughout. Very fun! While working on it, I envisioned leaving on a train to run away from a love gone bad.
My absolute favorite line is from the song CroMagnon: “I feel my heart come skipping out my skin and soaring.” Not only is it a great alliteration, the melody lifts at that point which makes the ‘soaring’ feel real. Such a good line and it gets stuck in my head all the time.
There are other incredible songs on this album that I was not on that you should definitely check out as well! I don’t have any first-hand experience with those but the entire album is so eclectic and cool. The songs have such depth and emotion in them.
Electric Fits is now out and available at www.tarbeachmusic.com and it’s worth a listen if you like old school soul with a James Bond vibe. Congrats Walt and I’m so excited for you!
