Standard beginning: If you missed my post about why I’m writing about these, check that out here. Otherwise, let’s get started!
Your Throat Chakra is located in your throat. I know it’s hard to figure that one out, haha. It’s actually throughout that entire area of your body though, and it’s important not to simply focus all of your energy on the throat area for this chakra. That can be tough for singers and musicians, but that’s why this is an important chakra for us to focus on today! The throat chakra is the 5th chakra and is associated with the color blue.
The sounds associated with the Throat Chakra
The key of G benefits the Throat Chakra. As with all other chakras there are a wide variety of thoughts and opinions on what sound frequencies are best, but if you want to see a quick video to open your Throat Chakra this is a good one:
You’ve probably noticed that I’m big on this channel’s videos. I don’t have any association with them, I just like that they have a quick, clear video of each chakra with the right key. I’ll use them for all of these posts but you can find a ton of videos about each chakra on YouTube!
How will I know if my Throat Chakra isn’t aligned?
This is a tricky one, especially for singers. Since we’re prone to having throat issues, it’s easy to just assume that that’s the chakra that needs work. I would caution you to not take the easy answer. All chakras must work together, and any of them could lead to physical throat problems. The Throat Chakra is in charge of communication, so if you’re having issues getting your message across, this may be the area to consider. Are you having a problem writing lyrics? Any issues with band members?
If you do have actual throat problems, I’m advising you to see an ear/nose/throat doctor. As a musician, your voice is obviously important, and you don’t want to cause any damage by refusing to seek help.
How can I align it?
A couple quick tips:
- Surround yourself in the color blue (clothing, candles, etc)
- Sing (provided your throat isn’t damaged or sore)
- Communicate with love (if you’re having trouble expressing yourself to someone, this is important). Try writing it out first if you’re having trouble finding the words.
- Drink water or tea
- Listen to music in the key of G
What songs are good for the Throat Chakra?
Since the Throat Chakra is about communication, I would recommend rap/hip hop, or maybe even musical theater. You want something that isn’t just in the key of G, but something that will help you align your center. Here are some songs that might fit:
Nirvana, “Come As You Are” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vabnZ9-ex7o
So the reason I put this one here is I had a really weird connection. The entire time I was writing this, this song was in my head. I hadn’t heard it today, it was just playing in my mental background as I wrote. So this is weird and I’m taking it as a message that someone might need it! Remember, you generally want happy/uplifting songs for this, but if you can channel your pain through a song that’s awesome too.
Michael Jackson, “Man in the Mirror” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PivWY9wn5ps
I mean, come on. This is just an amazing song for whatever reason, and it’s a powerful video as well.
Whitney Houston, “I Have Nothing” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxYw0XPEoKE
You knew I was going to throw a Whitney song into this blog series somewhere! But I chose this song specifically because it’s a great communication song. Got someone you can’t live without? Do they know? If not, let them know!
Madonna, “Express Yourself” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsVcUzP_O_8
Perfect for your Throat Chakra!
Outkast, “Hey Ya” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2W8pFEt-y0
This is sort of a hip hop song? I would consider it more pop but whatever you want!
I realize I suggested hip hop or Broadway and then gave you none of those. Really I don’t think the wrong key will be “bad” for your chakra, as long as you focus on it with the right intention. If you don’t like any of these, here’s a list of songs in G.
